Global positioning systems (GPS)
There has been enormous development of GPS in recent years. Many of the limitations inherent in early GPS models have been eliminated. The modern system utilises both the American GPS and Russian GLONASS systems. This provides access to a greater number of satellites at any one time giving the user more options and creating a more rigorous solution for coordinate fixing.
Modern equipment can provide horizontal accuracies of 8-10mm.
total stations
The modern total station is a complete package. It has the ability to store large amounts of data and transfer it to a computer for processing. Thus eliminating potential written erros. The on board software allows for manipulation of data in the field. Whether the data has been collected in the field or uploaded prior, this flexibility provides more options for the surveyor and client.
